BMW X3 Camshaft Position Sensor

BMW X3 Camshaft Position Sensor is the timekeeper of the engine because it is responsible for providing precise information on camshaft position and speed to the electronic control module so fuel injection and ignition will hit their targets on each cycle. Positioned near the camshaft or behind the cylinder head, this Camshaft Position Sensor is applied to read a toothed reluctor ring and then sends rapid voltage signals that allow the computer to synchronize the injector pulses in the order of firing to prevent hesitation and stalling. Early X3 models shared a magnetic Camshaft Position Sensor based on variable reluctance, while later versions were changed to a more accurate hall effect style Camshaft Position Sensor that was distinguished by its ability to produce a clean digital on-off pattern at low engine speeds. In the current X3 lineup by BMW, the hall sensor is the norm. The hall design is also more immune to electrical noise, which gives better cold starts and the ability for variable valve timing measures applied in the recent BMW powerplants. Despite the change, every BMW X3 continues to rely on its final Camshaft Position Sensor to ensure that the crank and cam events are perfectly aligned to ensure smooth power and reliable fuel economy.

BMW X3 Camshaft Position Sensor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: Where are the intake and exhaust camshaft position sensors located and how to replace them on a BMW X3?
    A:
The intake Camshaft Position Sensor on the M54 engine is located at the left side of the cylinder head close to its front. First, ensure that the ignition is turned off as a safety precaution. Remove upper engine covers and also air-filter housing with ducts. At the left side of the cylinder head, disconnect Engine Vent Hose from Cylinder Head Cover and VANOS solenoid electrical connector. Unscrew VANOS solenoid and in case of need, disconnect oil supply line from VANOS adjustment unit. Take away Camshaft Position Sensor mounting bolt followed by taking out the sensor from cylinder head. We shall reach under the Intake Manifold to remove Camshaft Position Sensor Harness Bracket Assembly so we can unplug its harness before we can take it out completely. Before removal, attach a stiff wire to the connector that will enable you to route harness during reinstallation easily. While installing new sensor use new sealing O-rings only; make sure that sensor harness is routed same way as before. Verify and clear any fault codes stored in ECM memory. Check ECU for error codes responsible for setting off MIL light. Replacing exhaust Camshaft Position Sensor on M54 engine is similar but it locates on right side of cylinder head closest to front. Besides for N52 engines, intake one mounts at left front face of cylinder head while exhaust one mounts at right front face of cylinder head. Similarly, if not identical steps are followed when replacing these sensors as for M54 engine whereby ignition should be ensured that it is off first together with removing upper engine covers, air filter housing plus ducting, detaching Camshaft Position Sensor electrical connector, removing mounting bolt and installing new one using new sealed O-rings. Verify and clear any fault codes stored in ECM memory. Walk around car ensuring every door is shut tightly or not.
