  Q: How to replace knock sensors on BMW X3?

  The knock sensors for M54 engine are under intake manifold located on the left side of cylinder head. Before starting off replacement process, remember to disconnect the negative (-) battery cable and cover battery terminal to avoid accidental contact. Once the engine is completely cool down, remove intake manifold. On the left side of the block, unplug electrical harness connector for knock sensor. The knock sensor fixing bolts are at lateral part of cylinder block; pull out these through sensors' sides. When taking off a knock sensor from a block, it should be noted that previously installed angle and then it should be installed into its previous position once again. Using appropriative torque wrench attach the bolt fixing a sensor in a proper hole having watchful attention so as not to overtighten it. Clean contact surface between engine block and onto senser before inserting new knock sensor. Finally, check and delete all trouble codes from ECM memory. Replacing Knock Sensors on N52 Engine This process is similar when replacing knock sensors on N52 engine too. Like in M54 engines, their locations are directly under intake manifolds situated on left sides of cylinder heads.
