The intervals of replacing the air filter stated are assumed for normal driving conditions, if however, the vehicle is mostly driven in conditions that include dusty environment then the air filter should be changed often. For removing the upper air filter housing simply release the clamps of the mass air flow sensor and the upper air filter housing clips. Subsequently, pull out the cover and insert a new air filter. During the installation remember to retain the O-ring for the mass air flow sensor in the upper air filter housing cover.

The BMW X5 Air Filter protects the engine by filtering out dust, sand, and other debris before the air reaches the combustion chambers. Drawing in nearly 10,000 gallons of air for every gallon of fuel burned, the engine in any X5 is dependent on unrestricted airflow, so the filter must be able to trap particles as small as five microns so that clean air can pass freely and save power and mileage. Over time, dirt accumulates on the media, limiting flow. Therefore, BMW suggests replacement periodically to maintain throttle response and fuel economy. Throughout the production run, all X5s have utilized a dry pleated paper Air Filter contained in a remote air box because all models use electronic fuel injection, but there are no differences in the layout of the diesel versions, which are the same as the flat panel setup. Earlier carbureted round styles of old vehicles never made an appearance in the X5 line, showing a consistent design approach.
