- Q: How to remove and reinstall the intake manifold while addressing potential leaks and ensuring proper engine performance in V8 engine on BMW X5?A:Defective intake manifold gaskets, leakage in other vacuum related connections, can cause driveability problems when idling while at the same time setting diagnostic trouble codes or the malfunction indicator light. Due to the potential of the existence of fuel in the base of the intake manifold, one should study the fuel system warnings when preparing for the removal of the intake manifold of the vehicle. First of all, remove the negative terminal of the battery observing the precautions stated concerning battery isolation. In the engine compartment plenum chamber, some of the sub-assemblies which can be removed include the ventilation microfilter, plenum cover, plenum seal, and plenum bulkhead. After that, remove the upper engine cover. Pop off the ignition coil cover trim caps, take out the fasteners and extricate the ignition covers from the coils. Remove the connectors and grounding wires of the ignition coil, air filter housing and ducts. Loosen the battery positive terminal wire and pull it away from the support and leave it aside. During the work on or above the intake manifold, it has to be disconnected the several vacuum hoses including the secondary air injection solenoids, knock sensor, camshaft sensor, and several other connectors, if any. Take off the left and right engine wire duct mounting nut and give a disconnect fo the fuel injector electrical connectors. Raise the left side engine wire duct and fold it to the right side, and both of electrical ducts should be located far from the intake manifold. If required, remove the connectors of the engine oil level sensor and crankshaft sensor. Slightly open the cap of the fuel tank, and then unfasten the fuel supply line of the rail with the help of a wrench and cover the fuel lines. In the back side of the intake manifold, disconnect the crank case breathers hose and the brake booster vacuum hose, and unbolt the oil separator. Last but not least, you should unbolt the intake manifold and then raise the manifold and the Fuel Rail off the engine being as careful as possible not to entangle any hoses or harnesses. After the reinstallation of the manifold, check the intake manifold insulators and gasket and replace them if they are worn out, and then clean the gasket flanges. Check that the manifold's multiple gaskets are correctly in place, position the manifold on the top of the cylinder head, and screw two of the mounting nuts loosely, before tightening all the remaining nuts in a cross shape from the inner ones.
