Inspect cooling system hoses by ensuring all connections are tight and dry, as coolant seepage may indicate a loose hose clamp, damaged hose, or dirty/corroded connection, with dried coolant appearing chalky. Conduct a visual and tactile inspection to assess hose condition, ensuring it feels firm and springy, and replace hoses that show any of the following issues: leakage with dripping or moisture near clamps or connectors; electromechanical degradation detectable by squeezing for cracks or weak areas; oil damage resulting in a soft, spongy texture with visible bulges; abrasion damage from wear or scuffing due to contact with engine components; heat damage indicated by swelling or hardened, cracked areas from high temperatures; and ozone damage characterized by small, parallel cracks without hardening from atmospheric exposure. To prevent issues, replace coolant hoses every 4 years, and when installing or reinstalling, use clamps specified by BMW, as some types do not accommodate heat expansion and contraction, leading to leaks.
