The following procedures cover the removal of the door handle, door lock cylinder, and door latch for the left front door. Other doors are similar but simpler due to the lack of a lock cylinder. To remove and install the door lock cylinder, first open the door. At the door's rear edge, pry out the plastic plate from the access hole, then remove the plastic oval trim. Use a 5 mm Allen wrench to remove the lock cylinder mounting screw. Slide the lock cylinder slightly toward the rear of the car and out of the door. If necessary, lever out the cylinder with a tool inserted in the access hole. When installing, ensure the notches on the inner lock are aligned. The installation process is the reverse of the removal. If the door handle gaskets are damaged, replace them.

Early X5 models had the traditional key-operated Door Lock with a cylinder connected by rods to the latch, which allows the key or interior knob to block the exterior handle. As the number of expectations increased, BMW introduced power Door Lock systems that install an electric actuator on each latch, such that pressing a master switch on the driver door immediately moves all locks without leaning across seats. Later generations developed remote keyless entry. The fob sends a coded radio signal to a receiver connected to every Door Lock, ordering each to engage or release, often with lights or a short horn chirp confirming, and many now self-lock in response to the selection of drive or speed increase.
