To remove and install halfshafts on 325iX models, several special tools are needed. These include 33 4 050 and DD 5 500 for driving in a new lock plate for the brake disc, 342 2 070 for pressing off the tie rod, and 31 2 160 for pressing off the control arms. To press the output shafts out of the brake discs, use 33 2 112 and 33 2 113, and to press them back in, use 33 2 112, 33 2 124, and 33 4 042. On the left side, the output shaft is pulled out of the axle shaft with 315 011 and 30 31581, while on the right side, 31 5 011 and 31 5 012 are used. To begin the removal process, raise the car and remove the front wheels. Drain the lube oil from the front axle by removing the drain plug. Lift out the lockplate in the center of the brake disc and unscrew the collar nut. Remove the attaching nut from each tie rod and press the rod off the steering knuckle with 33 2 070. Remove the retaining nut and press the control arm off the steering knuckle on both sides. Mount 33 2 112 and 33 2 113 to the brake disc with 2 wheel bolts and press the output shaft out of the center of the steering knuckle on each side. To remove the axle shaft from the differential on the left side, install special tool 31 5 011 and 30 31 581, and screw the 2 bolts in alternately to pull the shaft out of the differential. On the right side, install 31 5 012 and 315 011, and again screw the 2 bolts in alternately to remove the shaft from the differential. When installing the halfshafts, make sure the snapring inside engages in the groove of the shaft. Coat the spline with light oil before installing the shafts into the steering knuckle. Torque the nut to 61.5 ft. lbs. and use a new cotter pin when installing the control arms onto the steering knuckle. Torque the nut to 61.5 ft. lbs. and use a new self-locking nut when installing the tie rod onto the steering knuckle.
