BMW Z3 Flywheel

BMW Z3 Flywheel is designed to store rotational energy so the engine runs smoothly. It helps the starter crank the engine and provides the clutch with a firm friction surface. In every Z3, the Flywheel bolts to the crankshaft, and its inertia evens out the pulsing power strokes while the ring gear mates with the starter motor whenever you turn the key. During gear changes, the clutch disc grips the Flywheel face, a process that gradually wears the metal and can lead to hotspots or warpage requiring resurfacing or replacement. There are two main styles: a traditional solid Flywheel built from one hefty steel disc and a dual mass Flywheel that splits the disc into primary and secondary sections with spring dampers sandwiched between them to absorb vibration. While many solid units on a BMW can be machined lightly to restore a smooth surface, many DMFs in a BMW cannot be resurfaced because cutting would upset their internal clearances. Excessive noise, shake, or clutch chatter usually means a direct swap. Weak or chipped ring gear teeth, common after countless starts, also prompt replacement in a Z3 since the starter relies on intact teeth to spin the crank.

BMW Z3 Flywheel Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to remove and install a flywheel on BMW Z3?
    Posted by Reggie G.
    A:
Remove the transmission. Remove the clutch cover and plate on manual transmission equipped vehicles. Install a flywheel lock to hold the flywheel stationary. Remove the bolts and pull the flywheel off. To install, clean the mounting area of the crankshaft. Check the condition of the rear main seal and replace if necessary. Clean out the bolt holes. Use only new bolts when installing the flywheel. The bolts are not designed to be used more than once. Install the flywheel, and using new fasteners coated with a suitable locking agent, tighten and torque in a three step crisscross pattern as follows: S14/M20 M12 fasteners: 82-94 ft. lbs.(113-130 Nm), M42/M44 micro encapsulated fasteners: 88.5 ft. lbs.(120 Nm), all engines with automatic transmission, micro-encapsulated fasteners: 88.5 ft. lbs. (120 Nm), all others. micro-encapsulated fasteners: 77.4 ft. lbs. (105 Nm). The balance of assembly is the reverse of the removal procedure.
