BMW Z3 Rack and Pinions

By turning the driver's wheel rotation into accurate side-to-side movement of the front tires, BMW Z3 Rack and Pinions give the small roadster its quick, precise steering. Within a robust tube affixed to the chassis, a straight rack gear interacts with a pinion on the steering column. When the steering wheel is rotated, the pinion either pushes the rack left or right, thereby moving the tie rods which pivot the knuckles. This short and compact pairing forms the essence of the Rack and Pinions assembly. The compact Rack and Pinions unit ensures that the sporty BMW Z3 remains connected to the road by providing instant feedback. During production runs of BMW models, two kinds of steering emerged: one manual version found on the early European four-cylinder Z3 cars and a power-assisted setup fitted to much of the other trims. In both cases, the same Rack and Pinions geometry is applied. In the case of the power unit, hydraulic boost is also applied to lessen the effort needed to turn. As with all feedback in a modern power-steering system, a manual version simply relies entirely on the muscle of the driver, pure and uncompromised, delivering an even sharper feel to reward purists. Straight gears are widely utilized in these Rack and Pinions due to their efficient torque handling, low heating, and longevity when compared to the noisier helical alternative, which allows for confident control in every Z3.

BMW Z3 Rack and Pinions Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the rack and pinions on the steering gear of a BMW Z3?
    A:
To remove and install the rack and pinions on E30 models (except 325 IX models), start by raising and supporting the front end of the vehicle and removing the front wheels. Remove the steering wheel and the steering rack coupling bolt. Loosen the upper bolt to disconnect the coupling from the steering rack. Drain and discard the power steering fluid from the reservoir and disconnect and plug the fluid return line from the rack. Remove the pressure line hollow bolt from the rack and plug. Disconnect the Tie Rods from the Steering Knuckles and remove the steering rack mounting bolts. Note the holes the steering rack was mounted to. If applicable, disconnect the engine mounts above the steering rack. Raise the engine and remove the steering rack. To install, use the rear holes in the crossmember or the original holes if not the rear ones. Lower the engine and tighten the rack and pinions bolts and engine mount nuts. Connect the tie rods to the steering knuckles and tighten the nuts. Connect the return line and pressure line to the rack and pinions using new crush washers. Align the marks on the rack and pinions shaft and housing and the slot of the universal joint with the marks. Install the bolts and tighten. Install the steering wheel in the centered position. Fill and bleed the power steering reservoir and have the alignment checked. For 325 IX models, additional steps are required, including using special tools to support the engine and front axle carrier, removing the entire front axle carrier, and reinstalling in reverse order.
