Camshaft sprockets are further involved in the removal and inspection process as well as the installation of the secondary timing chain. This sprocket is assembled with the oil pump drive sprocket and on some engines, it is press fitted at the end of the crankshaft. To uninstall it, the first timing chain which is the primary timing chain has to be disconnected and then shifting the sprocket off the crankshaft. If it is a press-install, the recommendation is to use a three-jawed puller and while applying the puller care has to be exercised to cover the threaded bore with pulley hub bolt or metallic spacer. There is the installation orientation of the sprocket to be considered. If a Woodruff key has been removed, it should be restored if it is loose. When it comes to the examination, the following procedure should be taken: examination of the timing chain. Just before installation the Woodruff key should be placed again, also the sprocket has to be placed in the correct manner. In case it is a press-install it must first be heated to 302-degrees F (150-degrees C) and then aligned to the Woodruff key and hammered in. The primary timing chain should then be reinstalled. As for the secondary chain tensioner, it can be withdrawn only after one unscrews the bolts meant to retain it and takes out the timing chain known as the secondary one. After that, the locking tool should be taken out; then, the plunger, the spring, as well as the housing. The body of the tensioner should be checked for signs of wear and damage and usually worn out parts replaced. When reassembling, the cut-out must be placed on the right-hand side of the engine in case of reinstallation of the plunger. The chain tensioner should then be bolted back in place and tightened securely, the tensioner then should be locked before the secondary timing chain is bolted back in place. Replacement of the primary chain tensioner is also done as part of the primary timing chain removal and installation.
