    Q:
How to remove and reinstall the Variable Timing Sprocket (VANOS) units and adjust camshaft timing for N20 and N26 engines on BMW 428i? Posted by Customer
    A:
This adjustment procedure requires special tools, and the complete procedure should be read before proceeding with the repairs. Begin by unbolting the cover of the cylinder head. Then, remove both camshaft sensors. Utilizing the vibration damper bolt, rotate the crankshaft and position cylinder 1 to TDC firing position when the intake camshaft lobe points upwards. The exhaust camshaft cams should also be pointing up with cylinder TDC 1 The camshafts are at TDC when the part numbers or scan code as well as the inlet and outlet camshafts point up, at E and A respectively. Mount the special tool, securing it on the intake camshaft with the supplied bolt, and then secure to the exhaust camshaft with the supplied bolts. Prior to tightening and loosening the central bolt of the Variable Timing Sprocket, both legs of the special tool must be bolted. While counterholding the camshaft hex, loosen the central bolts of the Variable Timing Sprocket at the exhaust camshaft and the intake camshaft with the special tool installed. To gain access to the chain tensioner , unbolt the wastegate actuator on the left side of the cylinder head. Be prepared with a shop cloth for any engine oil that may leak out when you remove it. When reusing the timing chain tensioner, it is advisable to drain some oil and replace the sealing O-ring. Remove the Variable Timing Sprocket central bolt and impulse wheel on the exhaust side, and label everything. Remove the exhaust camshaft Variable Timing Sprocket by slightly lifting the timing chain and tilting it slightly for upward removal. Do the same for the intake camshaft Variable Timing Sprocket, ensuring not to mix up the parts. To re-install the Variable Timing Sprockets engage with the timing chain. Finally, loosely fit the impulse wheels and central bolts. Fit the special tool loosely to the front of the camshafts, turning the impulse wheels until the retaining pins align with the holes, and then push the pins into place. Finally, secure the special tool to the cylinder head. To pre-tension the timing chain, screw the special tool into the tensioner opening and tighten. Utilize an angle protractor to tighten the bolts at the center of the intake and exhaust Variable Timing Sprockets. Remove all special tools. Install the chain tensioner with a new sealing ring. Rotate the crankshaft two full revolutions in the engine rotation direction. Install the special tools and recheck the timing. The rest of the installation is the reverse of removal.
