    Q:
How to remove and install the steering knuckle on BMW 335i? Posted by Customer
    A:
In general, rear drive and xDrive procedures are different; these disparities are described in the text. First, lift the car and further, which the front wheel needs to be detached. For xDrive, insert a suitable drift to loosen the staked side of the collar nut, while applying the brake to hold the collar nut back with an assistant, or by applying downward pressure on it, you need to remove the collar nut using BMW special tool 31 2 080 and don't reuse again. Remove the three bolts with a breaker bar and hang the brake caliper aside with stiff wire still connected to the brake hose. In addition to that, you should make it a point to do away with the front brake disc as well as the wheel speed sensor. Remove the nut of the tie rod end and eliminate the tie rod from the steering knuckle, then dismantle the tension strut and the control arm from the steering knuckle. Thus for xDrive push the drive axle out of the steering knuckle. Place the front of the car on a servicing rack and support the steering knuckle properly by the help of a jack then remove the pinch bolt holding the front strut fixed to the steering knuckle. If required apply BMW special tool 31 2 230 to open the steering knuckle pinch clamp prior to removal of the steering knuckle. The rest of the installation is the opposite of removal; make sure that the bolt head of the steering knuckle pinch bolt faces the direction of travel; replace self-locking fasteners with new ones; ensure that the steering knuckle hits the stop on the strut; and tighten bonded rubber fasteners to the final torque with the car on the ground and loaded, bouncing the suspension a few times before final tightening.

    Q:
What is the function of the steering knuckle on BMW 335i? Posted by Customer
    A:
The steering knuckle or 'swivel bearing' is one of the two outboard attachment points for the suspension arms apart from acting as a wheel hub and carrier for the wheel bearing. The wheel bearings are factory sealed and therefore do not need to be serviced. Whereas in the rear drive models, the wheel bearing and hub assembly is just bolted to the steering knuckle, in the xDrive models, it is pressed onto the steering knuckle and requires the use of several special tools for removal. Well, it is different depending on the model, in xDrive models for an example, when you remove the wheel hub the bearing is destroyed and therefore, one needs to use the correct procedure for the model in question.
