If a new battery is installed, the replacement battery must be registered and recoded to the vehicle using a BMW scan tool. Prior to disconnecting the battery, it is important to read the battery disconnection cautions. Ensure the ignition is switched OFF, then open the battery compartment in the trunk or cargo area. Twist the plastic retainer counterclockwise to remove the right side trim. At the top of the battery, remove the mounting bracket fasteners and lift off the bracket. Loosen and disconnect the negative cable first, then unlock the battery safety terminal plastic cover and loosen the positive cable fastener. Carefully lift the positive cable, negative cable, and intelligent battery sensor off the battery and set them aside. Use caution when removing the negative battery cable with the attached intelligent battery sensor. Remove the battery hold-down bolt and disconnect the battery vent hose at the side of the battery. Lift the battery out of the trunk or cargo compartment using the handles, and clean away any corrosion in and around the battery tray and on the cable ends. When reinstalling the battery, reconnect the negative cable last. If a new battery is installed, ensure to register and recode the new battery specifications to the vehicle using a BMW scan tool and follow the battery reconnection notes.
