Extend the steering column as far back and down as it will go. Remove the instrument cluster fasteners and tilt the cluster backward out of the dashboard. Unlock and disconnect the harness connectors from the back of the cluster, then slide the cluster sideways to clear the steering wheel. During installation, ensure that the instrument cluster harness connector locking levers are fully unlocked before installing the connector. Recode the new or replacement cluster using BMW service tools DISplus, GT1, MoDiC, or equivalent.

The instrument cluster serves as the control and information center for the XS driver, connecting to vehicle systems and sensors through bus networks. Check Control displays the status and malfunctions of safety and convenience systems while also offering a self-test for the cluster electronics. If the vehicle includes an On-board Computer, pressing the button at the end of the turn signal stalk switch will display relevant information for the driver, including time, outside temperature, average fuel consumption, cruising range, and average vehicle speed.
