On 2003 and later 325i models with an M56 engine, special tools are required to remove the fuel rail and injectors. To begin, depressurize the fuel system and disconnect the negative battery terminal cable. For M52TU engines, remove the cabin filter cover and housing, release the cable from the air intake housing, and remove the trim panel and heater intake housing. Pry out the plastic caps, remove the plastic cover from the injectors, and disconnect the fuel regulator vacuum hose and air intake temperature sensor wiring connector. Disconnect the oxygen sensor wiring connectors and the fuel supply and return pipes, then remove the fuel rail with the injectors. To remove a fuel injector, pry off the metal securing clip and pull the injector from the fuel rail. It is recommended to replace all the O-rings when replacing an injector or a leaking O-ring. Lightly lubricate the new O-rings with petroleum jelly or acid-free grease before reinstalling the injectors and securing them with the clips. The installation process is the reverse of removal. For M54 engines, remove the plastic cover from the injectors, disconnect the oxygen sensor wiring connectors, air intake temperature sensor wiring connector, and VANOS solenoid wiring connector. Disconnect the fuel supply pipe and remove the fuel rail with the injectors. Follow the same steps as mentioned earlier to remove and reinstall the injectors. The fuel pressure regulator on M52TU engines is located within the fuel tank and cannot be serviced. If it is found to be defective, the fuel tank must be replaced. To remove the regulator on M52TU engines, remove the heater/ventilation inlet air ducting and the plastic cover from above the fuel rail. Pull the vacuum hose from the regulator, remove the circlip, and twist and pull the regulator from the fuel rail. Check the O-rings before installation and ensure the regulator is securely in place. For M54 engines, the regulator is integral with the fuel filter assembly, so if it is defective, the entire filter housing must be replaced.
