Testing should be entrusted to a BMW dealer or suitably-equipped specialist. The radiator outlet thermostatic switch is located in the radiator lower hose and should only be removed when the engine and radiator are cold. Before removing the switch, disconnect the negative battery cable. Either drain the cooling system or use a suitable plug to prevent foreign matter from entering the radiator. Disconnect the electrical connector from the switch and release the retaining clip to remove the switch and sealing washer. Installation is the reverse of removal, using a new sealing washer. Refill the cooling system and start the engine to check the cooling fan. The coolant temperature sensor is located on the front side of the cylinder head. Remove the air intake duct and disconnect the wiring from the sensor. Unscrew the sensor unit from the cylinder head and apply sealant to the threads before installing the sensor. Reconnect the wiring connector and refill the cooling system. The coolant level sensor is mounted in the base of the coolant expansion tank. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the retaining bolts to raise the coolant tank. Tilt the tank to access the sensor, rotate it counterclockwise, and pull it from the tank. Installation is the reverse of removal, and coolant may need to be added if necessary.
