Raise the front of the car and remove the road wheel, then remove the splash shield under the engine; make a length reference mark on the tie rod and remove the outer tie rod end; release the rack and pinion boot band clamps and slide off the boot, inspect for damage and replace if necessary, noting new rack and pinion boot kits include new band clamps; grease the tie rod taper so the small end of the rack and pinion boot will slide on when the tie rod is tightened to prevent twisting, slide the new boot into position and replace the band clamps, reinstall the tie rod end using the reference marks, and after reassembling the steering have the car professionally aligned and carry out steering angle sensor adjustment using a BMW scan tool.
