With the car raised and securely supported on stands, slowly rotate the rear wheel while inspecting the condition of the outer constant velocity (CV) joint rubber boots by squeezing them to open out the folds. Look for signs of cracking, splits, or deterioration of the rubber, which may allow grease to escape and lead to water and grit entry into the joint. Additionally, check the security and condition of the retaining clips, and repeat these checks on the inner CV joints. If any damage is found, the boots should be replaced. At the same time, assess the general condition of the CV joints by holding the CV Boot and attempting to rotate the wheel, then repeat this check by holding the inner joint and attempting to rotate the CV Boot. Any substantial movement indicates wear in the joints, wear in the CV Boot splines, or a loose CV Boot retaining nut.
