Clean the constant velocity joints with a suitable solvent and dry thoroughly, inspecting for cracks, flat spots, or surface pitting on the balls and checking the ball tracks for wear. If any components are worn or damaged, they must be replaced, and new boot repair kits should be obtained. For telescopic CV Boots, slide new boots over the inner end, repack both CV joints with grease, and apply grease to the splines of the inner CV joint shaft. Align the marks and insert the CV joint shaft, ensuring the correct distance from the end of the CV Boot. Ease the boots over the joints, ensuring proper location, and secure the inner joint boot clips. Position the outer joint boot clips 180° offset from the inner clips. Tape off and clean the old lubricant from the axle splines and also the splines of the triple roller bearing. Remove the dust cover from the CV joint and take off the circlip retaining the joint inner hub to the axle shaft, then press off the joint cap. Support the inner hub with a special tool and press the axle shaft out of the joint using another special tool, ensuring all old lubricant is cleaned off the shaft splines and inner joint splines. If disassembly of the CV joint is necessary for cleaning and inspection, matchmark the inner and outer race and intermediate ball cage to allow for proper reassembly. To inspect the CV joint, clean away the grease and check for galling, pitting, and other signs of wear or damage, noting that polished surfaces or visible ball tracks alone do not necessarily warrant replacement, while discoloration from overheating indicates a lack of lubrication and the need for a new CV joint. Slide the CV joint boot onto the axle shaft and apply a heavy-duty locking compound to the drive axle splines, positioning the new CV joint on the shaft with the raised side of the hub facing the shaft.
