- A:The back-up light switch, which is part of the neutral safety switch, can be found inside the gear selector trim cover. To remove it, start by removing the gear selector knob and the gear selector housing cover. Then, detach the neutral safety switch electrical connector and remove the mounting fasteners. Align the switch's slot with the slot in the switch housing and lift the switch upward to remove it. To install the switch, align the slots again and move the gear selector to engage the pin into the slots. Secure the switch with the mounting fasteners and reassemble the trim covers. Finally, install the gear selector knob and release button. For adjustment, follow the same steps but loosen the mounting fasteners before aligning the slots and engaging the pin. - A:Clean the area surrounding the switch on the side of the transmission as necessary. Disconnect the switch electrical connector at the side of the transmission. Remove the switch from the transmission by turning it counterclockwise. Installation is in reverse order of removal. To test the back-up light circuit remove the electrical connector at the switch and install a fused Jumper wire between the two electrical terminals, turn the ignition switch to the on position and the back-up lights should operate.Posted by BMWPartsDeal Specialist
