    Crankshaft rear main seal replacement involves removing the transmission and flywheel, followed by draining the engine oil. Next, remove the bolts holding the rear main seal carrier, including those at the oil pan, and carefully separate the seal carrier from the oil pan gasket without damaging it. BMW provides a kit for the rear main seal carrier and seal. When installing the new seal carrier to the crankcase, check the locating sleeves for damage, replace the gasket between the rear main seal carrier and crankcase, apply a thin coat of 3-Bond® 1209 or equivalent sealant to the oil pan gasket sealing surfaces, and lubricate the crankshaft and seal contact surfaces. Use BMW special tool 11 2 390 to guide the installation of the seal over the end of the crankshaft, ensuring the seal carrier and support bushing are pressed straight without tilting, and remove the installation guide carefully. Replace the sealing washers under the seal carrier mounting bolts, install the bolts, and torque them to specifications before installing the oil pan bolts. The assembly process is the reverse of disassembly, which includes installing the flywheel, torque converter, and transmission, filling the engine with oil, and running the engine to check for leaks.

    With the engine fully cooled off, remove the viscous clutch cooling fan, engine accessory belts, and crankshaft vibration damper and pulley, ensuring to mark the belts with their direction of rotation. Install the cap using the BMW special tool 11 2 383 on the end of the crankshaft, followed by the seal guide with the BMW special tool 11 2 385, making sure to align the groove with the keyway on the crankshaft. Use the oil seal puller (BMW special tool 11 2 380) by screwing in the body of the puller until it contacts the seal, then tighten the bolt in the center of the tool to draw the seal out of the cover. Coat the new seal with oil and position it in the timing chain cover, utilizing the BMW special tool 11 3 280 and the crankshaft center bolt to draw the seal in flush with the timing case cover. Reinstall the crankshaft vibration damper and pulley, and complete the installation by reversing the removal process, taking care to install the engine accessory belts and the cooling fan.
