Before installing the right and left side camshafts, ensure the crankshaft is positioned approximately 45° opposite the direction of engine rotation from TDC to prevent piston-to-valve contact. The camshafts are marked at the rear, with the intake camshaft for the left cylinder head (cylinders 1 - 4) labelled E 1 - 4 and the exhaust camshaft labelled A 1 - 4. For the right side, use a 27 mm open-end wrench to rotate the exhaust camshaft until the cylinder 2 exhaust lobe points up, and similarly rotate the intake camshaft until the cylinder 1 intake lobe points up. Install the camshaft bearing caps according to the stamped code or previously made location and orientation marks, ensuring that E is the intake side and A is the exhaust side, with the number 1 bearing cap at the front of the engine. Tighten the camshaft bearing cap nuts evenly in 1/2 turn steps in sequence 1 - 10. At the front of the right cylinder head, replace the sealing O-ring and press in the oil check-valve with M10 x 1 threads facing out, then press a new profile gasket into the groove in the cylinder head. Before reinstalling the VANOS oil distributor, inspect the camshaft sealing ring seating surface inside the oil distributor unit for normal wear and replace any damaged components. Reinstall the right VANOS oil distributor, ensuring the camshaft sealing ring gaps are at the top, lightly oiling the sliding surfaces, and install the upper oil distributor mounting Torx bolts while replacing the sealing O-ring on the lower mounting bolt. For the left side, follow the same precautions and procedures, ensuring the intake camshaft for the left cylinder head (cylinders 5 - 8) is labelled E 5 - 8 and the exhaust camshaft A 5 - 8, rotating the exhaust camshaft until the cylinder 6 exhaust lobe points up and the intake camshaft until the cylinder 8 intake lobe points up. After installing the left camshaft bearing caps and tightening them in the same manner, replace the sealing O-ring and press in the oil check-valve, followed by the profile gasket. Inspect the VANOS oil distributor for wear before reinstalling it, ensuring proper orientation and lubrication. Finally, install the VANOS units, set the camshaft timing, install the upper timing chain covers, and the primary timing chain tensioner with a new sealing washer, followed by both cylinder head covers.
