  However, in order to remove the N54 engine cylinder head, the engine has to be detached because some procedures and tools are required to perform the removal and installation of camshaft adjustment units and to time camshafts. One should read the whole procedure before carrying out any reparative work. Simply disassembling, pulling out or assembling the camshafts, camshaft adjustment units or the cylinder head with other than special tools have the potential of damaging or even breaking, for example bent valves due to contact with the pistons' crowns or a camshaft suddenly breaking if bent by the valve springs. If a cylinder head has been seriously damaged and so much work has to be done on it after it has been removed then one can order a remanufactured cylinder head from an authorized BMW dealer.
