2008 BMW 335i Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the cylinder head in N51,N52,N52KP six cylinder engine on 2008 BMW 335i?
A: The cylinder head stretch bolts are aluminum and if removed should be replaced for an an angle protractor for torque. First, pull the negative cable off the battery, make sure you have read the battery disconnection cautions beforehand. Lift the vehicle off the ground and then take off the engine compartment splash shield. Once the exhaust system and both exhaust manifolds have cooled remove these and then drain the coolant and oil from the engine. Subsequently, take off the ignition coil cover, air filter housing, engine air intake ducts and the intake manifold. Remove the coolant hoses from the cylinder head and turn the crankshaft using the vibration damper bolt to set No.1 cylinder at TDC while the intake and exhaust camshaft part nos. are correctly positioned. Ensure crankshaft is at TDC, then use BMW special tool to lock it through the bell housing flange port. With engine at TDC, use the BMW special tool set to lock down the camshafts, then remove the intake and exhaust camshaft adjustment units by unscrewing all the mounting bolts and removing them, and remove the timing chain tensioner making sure to catch any dripping oil. Remove the timing chain from the camshaft adjustment unit sprockets and put the units aside for a while. At the front side of the cylinder head, undo the timing chain module fasteners and release the chain module; position the new timing chain at the hole on the cylinder head but careful not to remove the crankshaft locking pin while doing this. It said to unbold and take off the valvetronic eccentric shaft senor and magnet wheel being careful not to allow metal filings to reach the magnet wheel. Lift the eccentric shaft and turn the stop screw between cylinders 1 and 2, then unscrew the cylinder head bolts, measuring their length to reuse them parwise and to throw away the aluminum bolts. In order to remove the cylinder head use the BMW special tools to loosen and remove the M9 And M10 cylinder head bolts with a cross-wise manner starting with the outside bolts, and then bolt lifting handles to the cylinder head for removal taking care of the weight of head which is approximately 40 kgs and put it on one side to avoid damaging the valves while cleaning antifreeze from the bolt holes in the crankcase.
