BMW 328i Crankshaft

The BMW 328i Crankshaft translates the vertical push from the pistons into a smooth rotating force that then delivers energy to the gearbox. Deep within the block and set at an angle is the Crankshaft. The function of the Crankshaft is to gather each impulsive force from the connecting rods, integrate it into a smooth rotary motion, and transfer that motion along to the timing gears. The Crankshaft is very little exposed to wear due to the seals and the full lubrication system. It rides on precision bearings that are bathed in pressurized oil. Earlier versions were made of forged steel, but later ones applied refined cast or machined steel. However, every Crankshaft has the same arrangement of offset crankpins that sit inside the big ends of the rods. The use of alloy mixes that prevent fatigue has allowed BMW's weight save to be achieved without compromising strength. Gone are the massive forgings, replaced with lighter cast pieces. The mass components have also been trimmed down for quicker revs. Owners of the sporty 328i coupe or the later turbo four-cylinder 328i sedan do not usually need to schedule service for the Crankshaft unless there has been oil starvation or extreme overheating. The balanced weight and strength of these engines give BMW engines a lively response.

BMW 328i Crankshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to remove a crankshaft on BMW 328i?
    Posted by Morris G.
    A:
To begin removing the crankshaft, one may take measurements of endplay using a dial indicator or feeler gauges. To obtain access to the lower cylinder block, it is necessary to undo and pull out the main bearing cap bolts as well as the lower cylinder block bolts. By having an assistant, slowly lift the crankshaft out of the engine. In installation, either main bearing caps or lower cylinder block are removed for flipping over of engine block upside down. The original bearing inserts are pulled out and cleaning is done on these surfaces. Properly located new upper and lower main bearing inserts are used with appropriate alignment ensured. Next step involves laying in position the crankshaft after checking of main bearing oil clearance by use of Plastigage. If any need arises for that matter different kinds of inserts would have to be applied. When this is done Plastigage material from under bearings is scrapped off while being careful not to damage them and then lift up crankshaft again before continuing with work whereupon insert faces together are greased so that now finally fits back into cylinder bock after which install lower cylinder block installing all torque correctly specified bolts there. Final verification must involve its hand movement when rotating through rear mains whereby lastly into makes way trying out new seal.
