Disconnect the negative battery cable and cover the battery terminal to prevent accidental contact. Prior to disconnecting the battery, read the battery disconnection cautions. Extend the
Steering Wheel as far back and as low as possible, then remove the driver airbag. Next, remove the steering wheel, ensuring not to move the front wheels from the straight-ahead position while the steering wheel is off, and avoid turning or twisting the airbag and horn contact spring. Remove the steering column trim, left lower dashboard trim, and left dashboard panel, followed by the left footwell duct. Disconnect the harness connectors for the steering column switch cluster and remove the wiring harness from the steering column. In the footwell, slide the sleeve for the steering spindle upwards on the steering column and remove the pinch bolt that joins the upper section of the steering spindle to the lower section. While working underneath the steering column, loosen and remove the steering column fasteners, having an assistant support the column during this process. Guide the column off the steering spindle swivel joint and remove it. The installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring the spindle sleeve is slid on the column, cleaning all threads of residual adhesive, aligning the upper steering column with the lower spindle clamp so the pinch bolt rests in the groove of the steering column, and using a new pinch bolt. Fit the spindle sleeve back into the opening in the floorboard, aligning the marks on the sleeve and floorboard, and use new bolts to mount the column to the dashboard brace. Finally, check the steering system for freedom of movement through the entire steering column adjustment range and carry out the steering angle sensor adjustment using a BMW scan tool. If replacing the steering angle sensor, code it using the BMW scan tool before performing the steering angle offset check.
