BMW X3 A/C Receiver Drier

The BMW X3 A/C Receiver Drier aids the cabin cooling process by absorbing moisture and dirt before they enter the air conditioning circuit. Positioned between the evaporator and compressor, the A/C Receiver Drier is a small canister made of aluminum. This component can be described as a filter and storage bottle, as it requires the refrigerant to be dried, and the A/C Receiver Drier is full of desiccant pellets that absorb moisture. In addition, this part collects excess oil from the evaporator and tiny flakes of metal that may cause damage to sensitive components. Through the separation of the liquid and vapor phases, the A/C Receiver Drier ensures that only clean, gaseous refrigerant enters the compressor. This device also ensures that pressure remains constant in each and every BMW climate circuit. The early X3 models utilized the conventional cylindrical A/C Receiver Drier, which was bolted directly onto hard lines. The later models, though, applied the same design but in a slimmer cartridge that was housed inside a compact assembly. This saved under-hood space and alleviated replacement. Although both styles have the same jobs, the later insertable unit is lighter and permits faster service as the driver swaps the core rather than the entire shell. Overall, the A/C Receiver Drier is the unsung hero of any system and should be replaced on time by every BMW X3 driver.

BMW X3 A/C Receiver Drier Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to properly disconnect and replace the A/C Receiver Drier in the front of an A/C system on a BMW X3?
    Posted by Joanne G.
    A:
Following manufacturer's instructions, connect an approved refrigerant recovery, recycling, or recharging unit to the A/C system and discharge the system. Remove the windshield washer reservoir and the fasteners, then take out the refrigerant lines. It is important to replace the receiver-drier if there is dirt in the A/C system, if the compressor has seized or been replaced, if the condenser or evaporator has been replaced, if the A/C system is leaking and there is no more refrigerant, or if the A/C system has been open for 24 hours or more. Partially remove the front fender liner, loosen the fasteners, slide the receiver dryer towards the top, and disconnect the electrical connection. Installation is the reverse of removal.
