This valve, also known as the Idle Control Valve, is controlled by the Engine Control Module (ECM) to maintain a consistent idle speed during engine warm up and when consumers such as the air conditioner are activated. It functions as a controlled air bleed, bypassing varying amounts of air around the closed throttle valve to maintain the idle speed. The Idle Control Valve can be tested using diagnostic equipment such as a duty cycle meter or dwell meter, or with a digital ohmmeter to check the resistance between terminals. Removal and installation procedures vary depending on the engine model. For S14 engines, the valve is located below the intake manifold and can be removed by disconnecting the electrical plug and loosening the hose clamps. For M20 engines, the valve is mounted on the air intake hose near the throttle body and can be removed by disconnecting the electrical plug and removing the strap. For M42 engines, the valve is mounted on the intake manifold and can be removed by disconnecting the electrical plug and removing the valve from the connection hoses. For M44 engines, the valve can be removed by detaching the electrical connector and removing the mounting fasteners. For M50 engines, the valve is located under the intake manifold and can be removed by disconnecting the air intake duct, disconnecting the electrical plug, coolant hose, and hoses from the valve, and disconnecting the vacuum hose before pulling the valve from the retainer.
