The Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor (IAT) sensor, mounted on the top of the intake manifold, adjusts the fuel mixture and timing with reference to intake air temperature. This NTC (negative temperature coefficient) sensor works in a manner that inversely to the temperature, the resistance passing through the sensor reduces. If the intake air temperature signal is invalid, a DTC is set and if the OBD II fault criteria is achieved, the MIL turns ON. In such cases, the ECM uses the aforesaid command signal in combination with the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor signal as backup. To reach the sensor power and ground, one needs to turn off the vehicle engine and take the intake manifold cover off. Disconnect the electrical connection to the Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor and, on the side of the temperature sensor, there will be a locking clip that should be pressed and the sensor pulled directly backwards out of the intake manifold. The installation is done in the reverse manner to the removal where a new sealing O-ring is used at the base of the sensor and assembled with the aid of assembly lubricant. Last but not the least, tighten the connector and scan the computer for any codes and erase as well as reset the ECM memory as may be required.
