2009 BMW 335i Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the cylinder head in N54 six cylinder engine on 2009 BMW 335i?
A: All the cylinder head stretch bolts are aluminum and thus must be replaced any time they are removed; torque is best measured using an angle protractor. First, one should remove the negative cable from the battery, and one should first read the battery disconnection cautions. Disconnect the ignition coil cover and engine, and the cylinder head cover together with the intake manifold. Third, strip the lot, including both exhaust manifolds and turbochargers. Using the vibration damper bolt, turn the crankshaft in order to bring the number one piston to TDC firing position and making sure that lobes for intakes and exhaust camshafts of number six cylinder are pointing downward with no contact to roller cam followers. Checking the cylinder 6 cam lobe positions can be done using a mirror. Below the engine there is an access plug on the engine case to the left of the lower part of the exposed flywheel; simply unlock it and insert the flywheel locking pin through the hole in the engine bell housing flange into the corresponding hole in the flywheel as the relative position of the two may be rotated to align the holes. This secures the crankshaft at TDC; attention should be taken here not to mix up the larger hole near the flywheel with the TDC hole. Remove the intake and exhaust camshaft adjustment units by using special tool set to unlatch the camshafts and loosening and discarding the mounting bolts and then removing the timing chain tensioner along with the oil dripping off, and unbolt the timing chain from the camshaft adjustment unit sprockets. The timing chain module has to be removed from the front side of the cylinder head: carefully, do not remove the crankshaft locking tool, there's a timing chain in the middle of the cylinder head opening. Loosen the cylinder head bolts to the timing chain housing to enable forward movement by about an inch to expose the lower bolts while holding the other side of the timing chain rail with a mechanical gripper to avoid dropping the bolts into the crankcase; all the bolts have different measurements in order to fit back in them properly. Take appropriate special tools to pull M9 and M11 cylinder head bolts out and throw away all aluminum bolts; use magnet to pick up the cylinder head bolt washers. Last but not the least, fasten the lifting handles on sets to the cylinder head and lift from the support mechanism; bear in mind the cylinder head should be put on a workbench upright to spare the valves; clean right away the bolt holes in the crankcase containing antifreeze with water.
