To remove the transmission, start by removing the clutch pressure plate from the flywheel. Make sure to catch the clutch friction disc as it may drop out. Inspect the clutch disc for any damage or wear, and replace it if necessary. Check the flywheel for cracks or damage, and resurface it if needed. Replace the release bearing along with the clutch disc. Clean all surfaces and ensure there is no oil or grease. Position the disc on the flywheel with the correct side facing out. Use a tool to center the friction disc. If reusing the original pressure plate, use a special tool to compress the diaphragm spring and reset the self-adjusting mechanism. Install the clutch cover assembly, aligning the marks if applicable. Tighten the mounting bolts to the specified torque. Remove any tools used and install the transmission.

BMW 330i Pressure Plate

The BMW 330i Pressure Plate clamps the clutch disc to the flywheel in order for engine torque to be transmitted smoothly to the gearbox. Nestled in the bell housing, this active member of the clutch clamps with either a cone-shaped diaphragm spring or a set of three lever-operated coil springs. It releases when the driver pushes the pedal, allowing the release bearing to pull the plate away for changing gears. Early BMW 330i models and performance-focused trims often applied Borg & Beck or long style lever designs, which are known for their high clamping ability under heavy loads. Many later 330i cars use the diaphragm Pressure Plate that requires a lighter pedal effort, provides a gentler engagement, and is suited to the hydraulic linkage fitted to the manuals of modern BMWs. Both versions have the same heavy pressure ring, cover, and wear-prone friction face, but they differ in their spring systems. The diaphragm's single Belleville spring flattens under load compared to the three lever fingers compressing multiple coils. Regular driving will benefit from the even, self-adjusting force of the diaphragm Pressure Plate, but racing or towing will still prefer the hard-driving bite of a lever Pressure Plate.
