BMW 330i Clutch Fork
The BMW 330i Clutch Fork converts the force applied to the clutch pedal into axial movement of the release bearing, thereby enabling disengagement of the transmission from the engine to facilitate smooth gear shifting. The Clutch Fork, located within the bell housing, is the last lever in the hydraulic or cable link. The Clutch Fork receives force from the slave cylinder or cable, pushing the throw-out bearing against the pressure plate. The use of the hydraulic system in modern 330i sedans indicates that the pedal pushrod, master cylinder, fluid line, slave cylinder, and Clutch Fork all work together in a way that produces a self-adjusting low-effort operation. Some earlier BMW models with rear-wheel drive did use a cable setup. This operated the same Clutch Fork, but it was only a connection at that fork and required a manual adjustment at the fork end. Thus, the pedal feel would change as parts wore. No matter the linkage type, the Clutch Fork pivots to apply pressure to the bearing only when the driver steps on the pedal. This reduces clutch wear but lets you know your bearing is noisy when service is required. The difference from a standard layout is that later builds of the BMW 330i were fitted with a concentric slave cylinder, which moves the bearing directly. This allows getting rid of the fork and trimming part count.

- Q:How to Remove, Inspect, and Install the Clutch Fork and Release Bearing on BMW 330i?Posted by Gillian D.A:Removal begins with the removal of the transmission. The Clutch Fork is then slid sideways to release it from the retaining spring clip and pivot, then the Fork and bearing are pulled forwards from the guide sleeve. It is important not to detach the release bearing from the Fork as they are only available as a complete assembly. Inspection involves spinning the release bearing and checking it for excessive roughness. Holding the outer race, attempt to move it laterally against the inner race. If any excessive movement or roughness is evident, the bearing should be replaced. If a new clutch has been installed, it is wise to replace the release bearing as a matter of course. The release bearing, pivot, and release cylinder pushrod contact faces on the Clutch Fork should be inspected for wear. The Fork should be replaced if excessive wear is evident. The Clutch Fork retaining spring clip should be checked and replaced if necessary. It is advisable to replace the clip as a matter of course. Installation involves cleaning the release bearing contact surfaces on the Clutch Fork and guide sleeve. No grease or lubricant should be applied to the sliding surfaces of the bearing or guide sleeve. The Clutch Fork/bearing assembly is slid into position over the guide sleeve, then the end of the Fork is pushed over the pivot, ensuring that the retaining spring clip engages correctly over the end of the Clutch Fork.
