The BMW 330i Release Bearing allows the driver to quickly disconnect engine power from the gearbox in order to ensure smooth shifts and that the engine keeps spinning freely when the pedal is pressed. Hidden inside the clutch housing, this Release Bearing slides back and forth along a hollow shaft and pushes on the pressure plate springs whenever the clutch pedal is activated. This process creates a break between the crankshaft and the transmission until the pedal is lifted and the disc reengages with the rotating flywheel. The BMW 330i has seen two operating styles across the years, a cable driven Release Bearing which appeared on early manuals while the hydraulic driven Release Bearing has been more common on later models. Both of these designs employ the same sliding thrust mechanism, but they differ in the method by which pedal force reaches the bearing. The cable version uses a pull from the pedal, while the hydraulic version creates a pressure that requires less effort and allows finer modulation due to a longer stroke. - Q:How to Remove, Inspect, and Install the Clutch Fork and Release Bearing on BMW 330i?Posted by Gillian D.A:Removal begins with the removal of the transmission. The Clutch Fork is then slid sideways to release it from the retaining spring clip and pivot, then the Fork and bearing are pulled forwards from the guide sleeve. It is important not to detach the release bearing from the Fork as they are only available as a complete assembly. Inspection involves spinning the release bearing and checking it for excessive roughness. Holding the outer race, attempt to move it laterally against the inner race. If any excessive movement or roughness is evident, the bearing should be replaced. If a new clutch has been installed, it is wise to replace the release bearing as a matter of course. The release bearing, pivot, and release cylinder pushrod contact faces on the Clutch Fork should be inspected for wear. The Fork should be replaced if excessive wear is evident. The Clutch Fork retaining spring clip should be checked and replaced if necessary. It is advisable to replace the clip as a matter of course. Installation involves cleaning the release bearing contact surfaces on the Clutch Fork and guide sleeve. No grease or lubricant should be applied to the sliding surfaces of the bearing or guide sleeve. The Clutch Fork/bearing assembly is slid into position over the guide sleeve, then the end of the Fork is pushed over the pivot, ensuring that the retaining spring clip engages correctly over the end of the Clutch Fork.
