  • Q: How to replace a control arm with a non-replaceable bushing on BMW 428i?
    A:
If the bushing on the control arm starts to wear out, the entire control arm will need to be replaced. To a good height, jack up the car. Take away front wheel. If applicable, remove the control arm clamp of the ride height sensor link rod. For the left side only and if the vehicle is equipped with Xenon lights, unclip the ride height sensor from the control arm. After that unfasten the control arm bolts and with a soft mallet tap out the inner control arm mounting bolt from the front subframe. Use a special tool to detach the ball joint from the Steering Knuckle. Ensure that the thread bores, bolts, nuts and the mating surfaces are clean during installation. Using new fasteners, attach the bushing end of the control arm to the subframe without tightening the nut at this point. Connect the ball-joint of the control arm to the steering knuckle by means of a new self-locking nut and fully tighten it. In case it is applicable, reconnect control arm the link rod to the sensor which is ride height, install the wheel and lower the car. With the vehicle on the ground and loaded, tighten the bushing end of the control arm to the subframe. Bounce the suspension a few times before final tightening. Eventually, perform the steering angle sensor alignment using a scan tool and inspect the vehicle alignment.
