How to access and replace the oil pressure switch on the BMW X5?

Having access to the Oil Pressure Switch on a 6-cylinder engine is somehow wanting given that the intake manifold has been taken off. In the case of the V8 M62 TU engine, the Oil Pressure Switch is fitted at the bottom of the oil filter case. Turn the oil filter cap counter clockwise in order to release the pressure until it is possible to pull the oil filter cap to loosen it so as to allow oil to flow back to the oil pan. Unplug the harness connector from the Oil Pressure Switch and pull out the switch noting the flow of oil with a shop towel. The area surrounding the Oil Pressure Switch must be cleaned extensively before the switch is removed. There again, removal of the oil filter housing cap is done by loosening it and checking the oil level and then replacing the oil if required.

The BMW X5 Oil Pressure Switch has the constant duty of protecting the engine by monitoring the lubrication force and alerting the driver if the lubrication pressure strays out of the safe zone. Positioned in the main oil gallery, this Oil Pressure Switch uses a spring-loaded diaphragm that opens or closes an internal contact based on preset psi and then sends a low voltage signal to the engine control module, which orders the cluster lamp to prompt drivers to act before damage occurs. Early generations of the BMW X5 utilized a basic single wire Oil Pressure Switch that simply completes a ground when pressure falls below the threshold, but subsequent models of BMW use a dual function Oil Pressure Switch, sometimes referred to as a sender, which varies its resistance to provide graded data that can also be logged by the computer for diagnostic purposes.
