How to remove and install the drive shaft on the BMW Z3?

To replace the output shaft seal on many BMW models (318i, 318iC, 318iS, 318ti, 323i, 323iC, 323iS, 325i, 325iC, 325iS, 328i, 328iC, 328iS, M3, Z3) you need to take off the exhaust, cross brace under the driveshaft Insert and use Special Tool 26 1040 or alternatively to carefully remove the locking ring securing the center bearing. Take off the transmission support and transmission crossmember. Then, take off the flex coupling bolts attached to the transmission output flange. First remove the vibration damper. Put it aside when you pull it out with the flex coupling. Start by removing the bolts that hold the driveshaft to both the differential and transmission output. After that, remove the center bearing bolts. Then carefully pull the driveshaft downward while paying attention to a fuel tank connector bottom and joints that make sharp turns. Before bolting the driveshaft in place, start by hanging up the center bearing, joining the rear joint to the differential, and torqueing the fastener lightly. For the joints that are LI-connected or constant velocity, use 52 ft. lbs. (72 Nm) for bolt size M10, 23 ft. lbs. (32 Nm) for bolt size M8. Remove the old components carefully, slide in the front flex coupling and vibration damper, and tighten two kinds of bolts according to manufacturer's specs: M10-8.8 bolts need to be torqued to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm) and M10-10.9 bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (72 Nm). Place back the transmission crossmember, apply pressure to the center bearing to push it forward 0.157-0.236 cm (4-6mm), secure, and tighten the spline locking ring to 12 pounds-ft (17 newton-meters). Replace the heat shields, crossmember, and exhaust system at the end of this procedure.
