Q:
What is the function of the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor in the operation of the Engine Control Module (ECM)? Posted by Customer
A:
The Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor is a crucial component used by the Engine Control Module (ECM) in the operation of sequential fuel injection, ignition timing, and knock control. It is mounted on the front or side of the cylinder head and uses a reference marker on the camshaft to create an electrical pulse. This pulse helps the ECM identify when cylinder No. 1 is at Top Dead Center (TDC) of its firing stroke. The ECM uses this information to determine when to create an ignition spark and actuate the fuel injector for each cylinder. If the CMP sensor fails, there will be no ignition spark and the fuel injectors will not be activated. The testing procedure for the CMP sensor involves checking the resistance between terminals using a digital ohmmeter. The removal and installation process varies depending on the engine type, but generally involves disconnecting the sensor lead, removing any necessary components, and installing the new sensor with the appropriate torque specifications.
