    How do you properly remove and install a crankshaft sensor in V8 engine on BMW X5? Posted by Customer

    Ensure the ignition is OFF and raise the car, supporting it safely. Remove the front end reinforcement plate and detach the crankshaft position sensor electrical connector located in the right lower bell housing. Unbolt the sensor from the bell housing, taking care not to discard any spacer shims if they are present. The installation process is the reverse of removal; clean the mounting surface before installing the new sensor and reinstall any shims if applicable. If the flywheel is replaced, check the crankshaft position sensor for correct installation depth by rotating the engine until the flywheel pulse tooth is centered in the opening for the removed sensor. Measure the depth to the top of the tooth from the sensor mounting surface on the transmission and measure the length of the sensor tip. Subtract the sensor length from the distance to the flywheel pulse tooth from the mounting area on the transmission to determine the gap between the sensor and the flywheel. Use shims available from BMW to increase the gap as needed to meet specifications.
