- Q: How to replace the xenon headlight bulb on the front of a BMW 335i?A:Optional xenon headlights, known as high intensity discharge or HID headlights, have an unusual high voltage xenon bulb and separate control unit for the low beam headlights, whereas the high beam headlights are simply halogen bulbs. Thus, there are variations in procedures depending on the year model and options of the car. First of all, it is required to pull out the headlight fuse(s) and the wheel housing trim. Pop the clips at the back of the headlight bulb cover and remove. For Lx High Beam Bulb replacement, put your hands on the bulb container and pull it out of the headlamp, you unplug the bulb through screwing it, and removing it. Do not use hand to replace the bulb since this will transfer grease which will lead to early failure of the bulb. Removal is the opposite of installation; the cover should be properly placed back at the headlight. To replace the xenon low beam bulb, it is necessary to remove the harness connector reducing the xenon bulb ignition unit, unlock the ignition retainer and open the flap. This is removable as a complete unit with the xenon bulb from the headlight, and when installing the ignition the unit must fit precisely to the headlight. Like with the removal, installation is the process of getting the cover to snap back onto the headlight.
- Q: How to replace the Xenon headlight bulb on the front of a BMW X3?A:Vehicles equipped with optional Xenon headlights utilize a special high voltage bulb and control unit for the low beam headlights, while high beam bulbs remain conventional Halogens. For the driver's side headlight, the air filter housing must be partially removed, and for the passenger side, the windshield washer reservoir needs to be partially removed. In 2004-2006 (pre-LCi) vehicles, while working in the engine compartment behind the headlight, unlock the catch and remove the cover. Rotate the ignition unit for the Xenon headlight approximately 30° counter-clockwise to detach it, which will automatically release the Xenon bulb plug connection. Feed the ignition unit out of the headlight opening and remove it from the back of the headlight housing. Rotate the bulb retaining collar counter-clockwise, pull the Xenon bulb out of the reflector, and replace it without touching the bulb surface with bare fingers, as grease can cause premature failure. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring the bulb is fully seated in the headlight. In 2007-2010 (LCi) vehicles, the Xenon ignition unit and bulb are an assembly that should not be separated. While working in the engine compartment behind the headlight, unlock the catch and remove the cover. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition unit and bulb assembly, unhook the wire spring clips to release the assembly, and remove it from the headlight housing without touching the bulb surface. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring the ignition unit and bulb assembly is fully seated in the headlight.
