- Q: What steps should be taken to address clicking noises, vibrations, or other issues with wheels and Axle Shaft on BMW M3?A:If it is a front or rear wheel, and it's a click, check if there is debris, including a pebble, nail, or glass in the tyre or the tread; if there is, remove it; small pebbles don't puncture a tyre but sharp objects should be looked at by a tyre repair centre. Also look for constant velocity (cv) joint condition, if it is loose, broken, or worn out then replace it. If the front or rear wheel begins to vibrate at higher RPM, look for a bent rim and if such there is replace it, find out if the tires are imbalanced or whether they are internally damaged and rectify as required and finally look for worn or faded or damaged wheel bearing and if this is so replace it. For front wheel drive cars, if the front wheel will make a clicking sound, then you still need to perform the debris removal as well as the CV joint check. One of the signs is when the rear wheel produces a clicking sound - the same should also be inspected for any remnants and if found should be removed gently. In rear wheel drive cars, if front or rear wheel is making noise that sounds like clicking, again there might be something blocking it and this should be cleared as we have seen above. If ride deserves or vibrates, then look for a bent rear wheel or axle assembly or a cracked or bent axle housing, and replace damaged parts of the system, and check for worn, loose or damaged rear wheel bearings and replace if necessary.
- Q: Can right and left axle shafts be interchanged on BMW X3?A:Right and left axle shafts cannot be interchanged. Begin by raising the car and removing the front wheel. Use a suitable drift to release the staked side of the axle nut, then remove the center cap and reinstall the wheel before lowering the vehicle to the ground. With an assistant holding down the brake, remove the collar axle nut, ensuring not to reuse it. Raise the car again and remove the front wheel; if necessary, take out the spare tire carrier tray. Remove the stabilizer bar and lower or remove the exhaust. Next, remove the axle shaft CV joint bolts and, if needed, free the axle from the differential drive flange using a suitable pry tool. Press the axle shaft from the drive flange at the wheel side with a suitable press tool and remove the axle toward the middle of the vehicle. For installation, reverse the removal process, using a new collar nut and applying a light coating of oil to the contact face of the collar nut before tightening it firmly, but not to final torque. Install the road wheel and lower the car to the ground. With an assistant applying the brakes, tighten the axle shaft collar nut to its final torque and stake the collar nut.
- Q: How to remove and install the front axle shaft on BMW X5?A:Axle shafts in vehicles employ two types of CV joint. The outer CV joint is a traditional design that delivers power from the axle shaft to the wheel hub, allowing for suspension and steering motion. The inner joint uses a triple roller bearing system to minimize vibration and noise, allowing the axle shaft to adjust for suspension travel. To replace a CV joint or boot, the axle shaft must be removed. The process starts by prying off the center cap on the road wheel and loosening the axle shaft staked collar nut at the wheel hub. Next, raise the vehicle and remove the front wheel, splash shield, front end reinforcement, ABS wheel speed sensor, and front brake caliper (without detaching the brake fluid line). Then, detach the tie rod end, tension strut, bushing, and control arm from the steering knuckle. Remove the axle shaft collared nut and disengage the shaft from the steering knuckle. Using a special tool, force the axle shaft inner CV joint shaft out of the front differential, catching any dripping oil. Replace the differential or bearing pedestal flange seal when the axle shaft is out and replace CV joint boots if necessary. Always replace the inner CV joint locking circlip. During installation, coat the sealing lip of the flange seal with transmission fluid and ensure the inner CV joint shaft locks in place. Use a new collar nut and fasten securely. Check and refill the front differential oil if needed.For front differential flange seal replacement, remove the axle shaft and steering knuckle together. Remove the old seal and install a new one, ensuring the seal's lip is lubricated with transmission fluid before reinserting the axle shaft. When replacing the outer CV boot, obtain a repair kit. Remove the axle shaft, release clamps, and remove the boot. After inspecting the CV joint, place new clamps and the boot over the axle shaft, secure with fresh lubricant, and reinstall.For inner CV boot replacement, again use a repair kit. After removing the axle shaft, detach the inner CV joint housing, remove the triple roller bearing, and replace the boot. Clean off old lubricant, install the new boot, replace the triple roller bearing, pack with grease, and reassemble. Always top off the differential fluid after any work.
