How to remove and install the Neutral Safety Switch on BMW Z3?

The back-up light switch is inside the gear selector trim cover. Remove the gear selector knob and housing cover, detach the neutral safety switch connector, and remove the fasteners. Align the switch's slot with the housing slot and lift to remove. To install, align the slots, engage the pin, and secure with fasteners. Reassemble the trim covers and install the knob and release button. For adjustment, loosen the fasteners before aligning and engaging, then tighten.

BMW Z3 Neutral Safety Switch

The Neutral Safety Switch of the BMW Z3 prevents the roadster from cranking unless the selector is in neutral or park. As a result, the car does not lurch forward and backward when the driver turns the ignition on. The starter circuit is completed only when the shifter is in safe positions. There is an internal contact plate and spring plunger that make the connection. This device mounts on the transmission linkage. During the mid-cycle update, BMW executed a minimal wiring strategy by retaining direct leads to the starter relay. If the contact is out of alignment, power does not reach the starter relay and the engine stays put. The Neutral Safety Switch of early cars employed two wires and was bolted to the outside of the gearbox. Later, the same wiring was combined with the reverse light in a compact Neutral Safety Switch module, but both work the same. Other than the shape of the connector and location of the housing, differences in performance are insignificant as each Neutral Safety Switch measures gear position and either allows or blocks current. Typically, the driver notices a failed unit when the key is turned and there is no response, indicating that the Neutral Safety Switch circuit is open.
