How to safely remove and reinstall the front drive shaft and flex-disc on BMW X5?

Raise the car and support it safely, then remove the splash guard under the engine and the front end reinforcement. At the front differential input flange, counterhold the flex-disc mounting bolt heads, loosen and remove the nuts, and pull the bolts out. To avoid damaging the flex-disc rubber, hold the bolts stationary while loosening the nuts. Push the driveshaft backward slightly and slide out the flex-disc and centering flange, then pull the driveshaft forward to detach it from the transfer case, being prepared to catch any dripping transfer case oil. Before reinstalling, check the centering flange sealing ring and replace it if damaged, and also inspect the centering flange and flex-disc for any damage, replacing as necessary. Coat the driveshaft splines with Weicon® antiseize or equivalent grease and reinstall the driveshaft in the transfer case. Reinstall the flex-disc and centering flange, applying a thin coat of molybdenum disulfide grease when installing the centering flange. Ensure the arrows on the edge of the flex-disc point to the flange arms, then replace the flex-disc self-locking nuts and bolts, tightening the nuts while counterholding the bolts. To avoid damaging the flex-disc rubber, hold the bolts stationary while tightening the nuts.

BMW X5 Drive Shaft

The Drive Shaft of the BMW X5 delivers torque from the transmission to the axles so the vehicle can move. Designed as a hollow metal tube, the Drive Shaft has yokes on either end to house flexible joints that allow it to pivot as power is transmitted to axle assemblies that move up and down with suspension motion. The cardan joint, which is a universal joint, is very common. However, where the operating angle is high, a double cardan joint may be applied as a substitute for a single joint to decrease vibration. Where sharper operating angles are required, such as in all wheel drive layouts, constant velocity CV joints can be fitted. Some vehicles incorporate a two-piece Drive Shaft joined by a center support bearing to manage length and space constraints. The front section connects to the transmission.
