The BMW X3 is a compact luxury crossover SUV that has been in production since 2003, drawing its roots from the brand's 5 Series platform. BMW introduced this vehicle as a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), a new category for its X-line of vehicles. The BMW X3 was the pioneer mid-size, premium SUV in the automobile market. Its first generation was a joint effort with Magna Steyr of Austria, which manufactured all first-generation X3 models. From 2010, the second-generation X3 production moved to BMW's Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. The third and current generation, now assembled in South Africa's Rosslyn plant, brought innovative changes like the optional sDrive intelligent rear-wheel drive system introduced in 2018. In 2019, the BMW X3 xDrive 30e iPerformance model was announced, combining a conventional engine with an additional electric motor that produces 67 hp, providing an electric range of 27-30 miles. In 2020, a battery-electric version, first unveiled as a concept car in 2018, went into production in Dadong, China, and was launched in 2021. Since the first unit rolled out from the Graz plant in 2008, the X3 has been a hit with over 1.8 million units sold worldwide, highlighting its popularity and success within the luxury SUV segment.

The BMW X3, including models such as the F25 X3 35i M Sport and 2013 X3 F25 (N20) with N20/N26 engines, has been identified with three primary issues: a breakable timing chain guide, extensive engine complications, and unexpected acceleration. Notably, the timing chain guide in many X3 models is known to fracture around 100,000 miles, resulting in pieces gathering in the oil sump, which may be found during unrelated maintenance checks. If the chain misaligns, there's a risk of severe damage as valves might collide with the cylinder, potentially ruining the engine. It's often advised to replace the chain, guide, and oil pump chain proactively, especially for those aiming for extended vehicle use, to avert significant engine repair costs that can greatly exceed the roughly $2,000 preventative maintenance expense. The 2013 BMW X3 28i models have reported multiple engine and cooling problems, including the vehicle unexpectedly stopping at elevated speeds, elongated timing chains, broken plastic timing guards, and comprehensive drivetrain issues. In extreme cases, an entire engine replacement was necessary, sometimes due to the use of inferior fuel. The issue of sudden acceleration has also been highlighted, with occurrences of the vehicle unexpectedly advancing while idling or during low-speed maneuvers. The causes for this behavior are speculated to range from accidental pressing of adjacent accelerator and brake pedals to potential defects in the vehicle's fly-by-wire system, engine, or even factors like carpet interference. It's often suggested to document such unpredictable behavior on video as evidence for maintenance professionals. Given these issues, there's a pressing need for BMW to rigorously address them to ensure safety and regain trust.

BMW X3 Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How to remove post-catalyst oxygen sensors in N52 six cylinder engine on BMW X3?
A: To remove post-catalyst oxygen sensors on the N52 engine, first raise the vehicle and support it safely. Working from under the engine, remove the front end reinforcement plate. The oxygen sensor connectors are located under the transmission bell housing, between the engine oil pan and the transmission oil pan; label the oxygen sensor harness connectors before disconnecting them. Use a 22mm crow-foot wrench to remove the oxygen sensors, and during installation, apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the sensor threads. Ensure that the sensor electrical harness connectors are routed and connected correctly as they were originally. Exercise caution by not overusing anti-seize paste and avoiding contamination of the sensor tip with paste or lubricants.
  • Q: What are the steps involved in the installation and removal of front shock absorbers on BMW X3?
A: Struts are marked for right and left installation, and the procedure for front strut, upper strut mount, or spring replacement involves two main steps, The first is to work on the vehicle and carry out removing and replacing of the strut assembly and the second is to dismantle and assemble the various elements on a workbench with the help of special service tools. Start by lifting the car and, dropping the front wheel, dissecting the clip holding the brake fluid hydraulic line to the front strut; unscrew the upper stabilizer bar linking nut while holding the stabilizer bar link ball joint shaft using a slender wrench. Next, unplug the wheel speed sensor wire harness and brake pad wear sensor wire harness from the strut housing, unbolt the front strut pinch bolt and lift with a suitable jack the steering knuckle while pulling it apart from the strut. Maximum range of motion of the CV axle joint should not be exceeded through the steering knuckle, therefore this has to be supported. As an extra precaution in the event that the pinch collar on the steering knuckle gets stuck, BMW special tool 312230 may be required to increase the distance between the two pieces. For installation, position the strut over the alignment pins of the steering knuckle pinch collar and make sure that the areas where the pinch collar and stud clamp are to be assembled are free from oil and grease and locate the position of the strut centreing pin. Therefore, if the strut centering pin is not in place on the upper strut mount, then it is suggested that the positions of the studs be marked on the strut tower so as to be able to set the camber to this position when required. Tighten the spring strut so that is cannot drop out from below and then undo the upper strut mount nuts and carefully get the strut down out of the wheel arch, although the use of a spring compressor will give a little more clearance. The process is a reversal of the removal and involves such details as installation of the bolt head of the pin to the direction of travel, alignment of the steering knuckle with the pins of the strut body, and alignment check on completion.

Following the same, remove the second layer of the seat belt reel's cover that is the inner one. If necessary, also to remove the upper plastic trim and lower carpeted trim. Last but not the least, unbolt the mounting bolt for the seat belt reel, unsnap the fastener and pull the seat belt out of the car.

Out of the coolant pump pulley bolts and take off the pulley from the pump as well. Removing the coolant pump fasteners; however, tightening two M6 screws into the tapped bores of the pump and keeping them equal until it comes out from the timing chain cover. While installing, make sure that the sealing O-ring and gaskets are put back in, lubricate the O-ring before installation, refill the cooling system and check for any leaks and the last but not the least, fill in the cooling system and bleed it.
